About Me
Hello teacher friends! I'm Ashley, a second year 3rd grade teacher and bienvenidos a Loco en Tercero! (Crazy in Third)
A little bit about and the wonderful city and school I call home.
I was born and raised in a little town in Southwest Kansas. It is here that I teach an amazing group of diverse students. A majority of my students are not only ELL BUT they are also Mexican/Hispanic/Latinx. While OUr city is also home to many other cultures hailing from Asia and Africa. It is an amazing little town! (I do speak a primary level of Spanish, which has really blown me away being able to use it with my kids. My heart is so full when I can communicate this way.)
I grew up here surrounded by a lot of Spanish language, and Mexican food, music, and art. I have always been creative, adventurous, and a big time dreamer.
After high school I went on to our community college in hopes that I would "find myself" through art. I am still a self-described artist. After I realized that that career was a little bit different than I had imagined I realized it was time to get more serious about things if I wanted to ever live on my own, learn how to pay bills, and obtain my own health insurance... (I still make arts and crafts in my free time.)
I moved to Kansas City in 2011-ish and lived there for a year and a half, and it was AMAZING. Tough, but amazing. I also continued my education there, but this time in small business classes... again realizing that it wasn't for me.
That is when I decided it was time to come home, plant my roots, and figure out where I was going...
At the same time my best friend from high school moved back to our town and began teaching. This was a KEY event in me getting to where I am today. I paid a visit to her in her classroom and realized teaching was nothing like I thought it was, and that maybe I should have listened to my grandma all of these years. So after thinking about it, I made a plan for myself that included acing college algebra (because JuCo Ashley did NOT like math...) and getting a job as a Para in order to get get some classroom experience. I made a deal with myself that if I enjoyed work and passed the class I would apply for the College of Education at FHSU. The rest is history.
All of the pieces fell into place, and here I am today, teaching third grade at the very same school that I went to.
My first year was rough. It was pertinent for it to be that way though. I'm so excited to reflect and plan for next year, and there are some amazing professional development opportunities for me this summer that will help me in all of the areas I am needing help in, and of COURSE there is a pile of books I need to be reading!
There is so much more I wish to tell you about myself, but these things will all come in time.
At any rate... I'm not sure what all will be contained in my little blog yet, definitely educational related content and splashes of personal things, but I am excited to start sharing things with you.
Wondering about the llamas? My classroom is llamas and cacti! I just need to add more paper flowers and some papel picado to make it more home-y!
